Brown Hyena are the less common hyena species found in southern Africa. This species is more solitary than the very common spotted hyena. True story, I set a nice Nikon DSLR camera out on remote at a waterhole hoping to get a pic of one of these brown hyena. I did actually manage to get the shots but alas, the hyena ATE my entire camera. The lens, body, battery and perhaps most sadly, the memory card. Turns out it is common for hyena to eat random things as they get minerals from it. I was told by park staff that a brown hyena ate one of their shovels once.
